Pre-Wedding Rituals in Tamil Yadav

 Tamil Yadav community, also known as Konar or Ayar, follows a variety of pre-wedding rituals that are meant to invoke the blessings of the divine and to ensure a successful and happy marriage. Here are some of the most common pre-wedding rituals followed in the Tamil Yadav community:



  1. Vethalai Pakku (Betel leaf and areca nut) Ceremony: This ceremony is usually held a few days before the wedding day. The bride's family visits the groom's house and presents him with a tray of betel leaves and areca nuts, along with some fruits and sweets. This ritual symbolizes the acceptance of the proposal by the groom's family.

  2. Panda Kaal Muhurtham: This is an auspicious moment that is decided by the astrologer, where the groom's family visits the bride's house to finalize the wedding date and time.

  3. Naandi Shrardham: This is a purification ceremony conducted by the groom's family, where they seek the blessings of their ancestors. This ceremony is usually performed a day before the wedding.

  4. Mapillai Azhaippu: On the wedding day, the groom's family arrives at the bride's house with gifts and traditional clothing. This ceremony is also known as the 'receiving of the groom'.

  5. Kasi Yatra: In this ritual, the groom pretends to go on a pilgrimage to Kasi (Varanasi) and renounce the worldly pleasures of marriage. The bride's father persuades him to return and offers his daughter's hand in marriage.

  6. Maalai Material: This is the exchange of flower garlands between the bride and groom, signifying their acceptance of each other.

  7. Oonjal: This ceremony involves the couple sitting on a swing, while women sing traditional songs and rock the swing. This signifies the couple's happiness and commitment to each other.

  8. Kanyadaanam: The bride's father gives away his daughter in marriage to the groom, symbolizing his trust and confidence in the groom to take care of his daughter.

  9. Saptapadi: The most important ritual of the wedding, where the couple takes seven steps around the sacred fire, taking seven vows and promises to each other.

These are some of the pre-wedding rituals followed in the Tamil Yadav community, which are steeped in tradition and are meant to ensure a long and happy married life for the couple.
